Crime Stoppers programs operate in communities across Kansas and worldwide. Here is how the model works and why it is so effective.
The Three-Part Model
Every Crime Stoppers program is built on a partnership between three groups:
- The Community ??citizens who report crime information
- The Media ??broadcasts wanted information and program awareness
- Law Enforcement ??investigates tips and makes arrests
Anonymity Is the Foundation
Unlike traditional police reporting, Crime Stoppers never asks for your name. You receive a tip number, and all communication happens through that number. Callers are not traced, and tips are not recorded with identifying information.
The Reward System
A volunteer board of directors ??not law enforcement ??decides reward amounts and authorizes payments. When a tip leads to an arrest, the tipster presents their tip number at a designated location to collect cash, still without revealing their identity.
